Atacand is prescribed to lower blood pressure in people suffering from hypertension. It is classified as an angiotensin receptor agonist. The medication functions by decreasing hormones that narrow blood vessels, leading to relaxation of the vessels and a reduction in pressure. Atacand is also utilized in combination with other drugs to manage heart failure and kidney issues related to type 2 diabetes.
The initial recommended dose of Atacand is 16 mg, to be taken once daily. The dosage may vary based on the individual’s response to the medication. Blood pressure response may relate to dosages from 2 to 32 mg. Atacand can be administered once or twice a day, with the total daily dosage ranging from 8 mg to 32 mg. Research indicates that higher doses do not necessarily enhance treatment effectiveness. The antihypertensive impact is most significant during the first two weeks, with the maximum reduction in blood pressure typically occurring within four to six weeks of therapy.
Like other antihypertensive medications, Atacand may lower blood pressure too much, resulting in dizziness, weakness, and chest tightness. Allergic reactions can lead to hives. Angioedema, characterized by swelling of the hands, face, lips, tongue, and even the eyes, has been linked to its use. Pregnant women should avoid Atacand as it may lead to fetal development issues or even death. Women planning to conceive should seek alternative medications. Studies indicate that breastfeeding does not transfer the drug from mother to child.
Patients with imbalances in sodium and potassium levels should inform their doctors, as Atacand can cause undesirable electrolyte fluctuations. When combining diuretics with Atacand, careful consideration is needed, as they may significantly affect blood pressure. A history of heart and kidney conditions makes Atacand inappropriate for those patients. Individuals undergoing dialysis may not be eligible for this medication. Additionally, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may reduce its effectiveness.
